I have long wondered why the lambic world hasn’t experimented more with tropical fruits – not counting the artificial, filtered and pasteurized Chapeau range – but it still came as a surprise when I first heard about a pineapple (and banana, apparently) lambic being made at Tilquin, but as a mere experiment, in fact even having started off as a joke. Glad I got the chance to taste this eccentricity at Tilquin Fruit Extravaganza #2 at Moeder Lambic Fontainas in Brussels. Snow white, quite mousy and firm, lacing, medium sized head on a hazy yellow blonde beer. Aroma of indeed ripe pineapple and very powerfully so, sour grapes, stale urine, damp hay, something glueish, straw; didn't pick up much of the banana though, but that is probably not a bad thing. Colourful pineapple juice effect in the onset as well, lemony sour and softly carbonated, but the deceptively sweet aroma of the pineapple makes way for a bready, tart, funky and Bretty full-fledged lambic profile – near the finish, the pineapple has been reduced to a vague echo. Ends bone dry and ‘barnyardy’. More pineapple in the nose than in the mouth, but a whole lot of it in the nose, so this weird experiment does deliver what it promises. Very enjoyable, in all, let’s hope this one will be released in bottled form eventually as well.

07-12-19 // 125ml from tap shared with at Moeder Lambic Fontainas at the Tilquin Fruit Extravaganza Event #2. Pineapple nose. Lovely fruit aromas. One of the most intense. Great. So subtle and mellow fruit aromas balanced in.

Sample draught @ SWAFFF! 2019 Brussels Craft Beer Festival (1st day) shared with BE RB crew and other gentle people there. F: medium, white, average retention. C: blonde, hazy. A: a lot of brett tones, basement, nice sour fruity, bit woody. T: sour fruity, woody, pineapple may too much but I like it, bit brett, puckering, medium body and carbonation, refreshing, very good, fully enjoyed.

Draft sample @ Swaff '19.

I Draught /I No head left, straw yellow beer. Dry, pineapple aroma, sweetish-light sourish, fruity, some malt behind. Sourish, fruity, pineapple², very little lambic flavour left, just a bit of Brett in the finish. Acidthinning, dry-out effect, long lasting flavours, low carbonation. Nice, but the pineapple stamp is so overpowering, it has little lambic character left.

Damn backlog, I could've been first! :-p
Clear yellow beer, creamy white irregular head, very stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: nice, lots and lots of brett, fruity notes, wood, citrus, bit spicy. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: surprisingly bitter in the start, quite some pineapple all right, soft acidity, more pineapple. Aftertaste: fruity, pineapple, nice citrus notes, apricots, more pineapple, maybe the bitterness comes from the banana peels?
