"Hibiscus de Boulbi Tilquin 2018" is a charity beer made for supporting the school of Boulbi, a small village in Burkina Faso (see www.boulbi.be). The dried hibiscus flowers that were infused in lambic before blending are coming from the village of Boulbi. Only 150 bottles were produced. Due to this limited number of bottles, it is not possible to take any bottle away. Every bottle has to be enjoyed in our small tasting room. The price for one bottle of 75cl is 30 EUR. All the money raised by this sale will be sent to Boulbi's school.

15/XI/19 - 75cl bottle @ Tilquin taproom (Rebecq), BB: n/a, 160 bottles only - (2019-1824)

Clear ruby red beer, practically no head. Aroma: sweetish, fruity, pomegranates, roses, a little funky. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: nice acidic start, very fruity, some berries, super sourish, lemony, dry, some pomegranates (must be the hibiscus flowers, but I’ll be honest, it’s not something I often eat :p ), lovely stuff. Aftertaste: dry, nice acidity, lemony, bitter touch, fruity, berries, lovely stuff.

The somewhat mysterious hibiscus-flavoured Tilquin lambic, finally sampled at Tilquin’s own premises in Rebecq, from a shared 75 cl bottle; these bottles are only sold there for on-site consumption, but all the profits go to a school project in Burkina Faso, in memory of a friend of Pierre Tilquin who sadly passed away. Mousy, medium thick, well-retaining, off-pinkish head, lightly hazy, warm and deep vermillion robe, a beautiful glow, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of redcurrant, lemon rind, hibiscus tea indeed, rosehip, grape peel, bitter weeds and old herbarium flowers, bread crumbs, hay. Crisply sour onset, lemony but not overly ‘burning’, sour apple and redcurrant notes, fizzy carb, smooth body, lovely bread-crusty malt backbone dried by the sourness alongside light funky Brettanomyces aspects and a bitter weeds effect in the finish, mingling with an old wood-tannic note and something strangely iron-like, very reminiscent of rosehip tea, bringing a very herbal, flowery aroma too – this is obviously the hibiscus department speaking. Ends mildly funky and earthy, crisp, fruity and herbal, with this bitter herb and rosehip-like aromatic effect lingering. Interesting, I sure enjoyed this one even in spite of my aversion to flower beers and hibiscus in particular. Well done and glad I finally got to taste this one.

Bottle shared at the source. Bit hazy deep red with a small pinkish head. Sour wheat, nice crisp mineral funk, soft lemon, pear, what is guess is hibiscus, 🌺, light red currants, plum skins. Solid medium sour, light sweet. There’s a lasting plum skin type bitterness throughout. Overall quite fruity! Solid medium bodied with nice sparkly carbonation. Lovely!
