The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

No head, beer pours as black syrup. Chocolate, bit of tobacco, liquorice, less than the Westbrook variant. Sweet & black chocolate, hints at booze, whilst finish is almost pure black chocolate. Dry and burning with a fiery finish. Quite good stout, certainly in the pastry cabardouche.

13 June 2020. At De Kelk, Bruges. Shared with the lovely Anke! From tap. Hazy black with a slowly diminishing, foamy, beige head. Aroma of chicory, cold coffee, walnut, macadamia, toast, wet tobacco, dark chocolate, biscuit. Taste has sweet chocolate, dates, biscuit & dark toffee, rather bitter coffee & chicory kicking in with 'walnutty' edge, very slightly umami rendered by that earthy note. Dry, toasty, herbal hoppy finish, sweet chocolate & biscuit in balance with bitter coffee roast, warming coffee liqueur alcohol in the throat. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Enjoyable all the way but I might prefer a (slightly aged) bottle.

Thanks to Lukasmh for this! Really needed to try this again since I had no idea what I was doing the first time I had this. Pours pitch black with a small to medium mocha head. Aromas of plums, raisins, deep cherries, dark chocolate, fudge, coffee, vanilla, malts. Taste is coffee, deep roast, plums, raisins, boozy heat, port wine, savory licorice, molasses dark bitter chocolate, dry coffee finish.

Bottle from the Craft webshop. Very dark brown/black colour, thick golden head which fades. Feels oily in the mouth, thick and boozy. Aroma is booze, dark, dark fruits, very roasty, dark chocolate, bit of coffee, the usual I guess. Taste is similar, but high on the fruitiness. Christmas cake elements, but boozy fruit, rather than spices. Nice bitterness at the finish. Dark chocolate, brown sugar. Nice.

Can. Black. Malt, roast, cinnamon, chocolate, hazelnuts and cacao in the aroma. Malty sweet alcoholic flavor with dark chocolate, hazelnuts and salted licorice. Cacao, roast, coffee. Sticky but decent.
