One of Vliegende Paard's more recent creations, a rye stout; thanks tderoeck for sharing. Pale greyish beige, mousy, creamy, slowly opening and dissipating head on a very dark chocolate brown beer with hazy burgundy glow. Aroma of bitter black chocolate, hard caramel, roasted walnuts, some light DMS (Brussels sprouts), grey rye bread indeed, clay, bayleaf, cigar ashes, blood-like 'natural' iron. Restrainedly sweetish onset with a light sourish undertone, fizzy carb, notes of fig and ripe pear but subduedly so; slick toffeeish and dark-chocolatey maltiness with a clear, coffeeish roasty edge and equally clear 'dimly' spicy dark rye bread aspect. The caramelly sweet undertone, however, lingers the longest, but whilst retaining a slight coffee touch; the DMS unfortunately returns retronasally. Too bad for that obvious flaw, Préaris has done some great things in the stout family in general but this is a bit below expectations, though still an interesting one for putting the rye forward so clearly.

11/I/20 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: X/2020 (2020-22)

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy irregular beige head, bit stable, non adhesive. Aroma: malty, lots of rye, pretty roasted, caramel, slightly smoky touch (might be the roasted rye again). MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish up front, malty notes, slightly metallic, some caramel, pretty thin flavour. Aftertaste: soft roast, sourish touch, bit weird, some red berries, tannins, more roast, slightly metallic touch.

Bottle at home. Dark brown to black color, virtually no head. Smell and taste malts, very metallic / iron, but also sourness. It really is an infectie. This is not intended, surely not. Hmm too bad, I think it could have been quite nice. 5-3-4-3-7.
