Last year’s rendition of this hoppy series which intends to highlight hops cultivated in Belgium, 75 cl bottle from Être Gourmet. Thick and very frothy, very thickly ’low-relief’ lacing, egg-white, irregular but very well-retaining head over an almost clear, peach-tinged golden beer with a thin ’haze’ of yeast bits throughout, expectedly becoming murkier and more ochre-ish with sediment added. Rustic aroma of unripe pear, dried wormwood leaves, soap, white pepper, hay, light banana, raw pineapple, bread crust, white pepper, green apple peel, freshly cut grass, gooseberry, ginger powder, bitter garden weeds (dandelion, even sow thistle juice), hints of tonic water, slight bubblegum, cloves, raw salsify, horseradish, dry cereals, camomile flowers, white grape peel, hint of very dry coriander seed and something faintly white cabbage-like in the background, but not in the DMS way. Refreshing onset, fruity but not overly estery, subtle pear, some apple peel (acetaldehyde) and even very slight banana sweetness surrounded by a dim, unripe plum-like sourishness, well carbonated if not fizzy, bringing further sourishness and lots of minerally side notes but not really numbing the tip of the tongue; supple, slightly oily mouthfeel. Cereally, almost grainy middle, ’green grains’ with a softening, welcoming bready touch, over which these unripe pear- and very subtly - if not ’green’ - banana-ish flavours travel onwards to a finish coloured bright green by grassy, very ’field’ floral hops, acting peppery and thoroughly bittering back down in the mouth, drying the root of the tongue in a ’bright green’, quinine-like way, more mellow than the 2015 edition but still strong and spicy enough to make this beer qualify as a ’Belgian IPA’ (as it is classified at Beeradvocate apparently), which is basically a compromise between Belgian blonde or tripel on the one hand and IPA (in a very generic way) on the other hand. The ’bitter field herbs’ (dandelion) kind of quality of the hops used here lend this beer a very rural character and act appetizing, whilst drying the back of the mouth and leaving behind a resiny bitterness that competes with the juiciness of the malts and relative sweetishness of the ’Belgian’ esters - this is, in fact, more saison-like than many ’would be’-saisons we have seen popping up everywhere within and outside of Belgium in recent years, just a lot hoppier. I suspect a dash of soapy coriander as well, but fortunately remaining very limited. Another one in the line of Plukker’s Green Hop series or Van Eecke’s Hommelbier Nieuwe Oogst series: tenaciously trying to hold on to the proud remainders of the centuries-old ’Westhoek’ hop culture in hopping up classic Belgian ale recipes, and, to my personal taste at least, doing so very successfully. As I have stated many times before here: it is about time that this new generation of hop forward Belgian blondes and tripels get their own style category as ’Belgian IPA’ or something alike. Recommended, though admittedly harshly hoppy from the bottle; this one truly makes me look forward to this year’s episode in this saga. De Ranke has been a kind of precursor to 21st-century beer trends in Belgium (Struise!) in the late nineties and may seem a bit obsolete now if you’re inclined to follow only the latest trends, as so many younger beer geeks do these days, but this and so many other of their beers demonstrate how well they master the Belgian traditions, and have added some - metaphorical - ’spice’ to them in a time when not many other brewing companies did so. This 2016 Hop Harvest is a classic Ranke beer as far as I’m concerned, and, much like the legendary and not-so-distant XX Bitter, it performs well in its tasked intention to cultivate both boldness (or rather: uncompromizing hop bitterness) and respect for almost bygone traditions, whilst firmly remaining cemented within the old boundaries of Belgian ales.

16/IV/17 - 75cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 13/X/21 (2017-450)

Clear dark blond beer, solid creamy off-white head, very stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: bit fruity, grains, yeast, bit spicy, peppery notes. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, soft fruity touch, malty, some grapefruit, grassy, very bitter. Aftertaste: pretty chemical bitterness, very harsh, unpleasant, nope... Don't like this edition. Maybe I waited a bit too long?

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Hazy tiny burnt golden pour with a frothy white head. Cereal malts, light fruity esters, yeasty spices & grassy hop nose. Bitter herbal spicy taste. Soft fairly dry mouthfeel. Solid & quaffable!
