Draught at the brewery. Browny red/dark amber colour with off-white head. Aroma spicy and roasted, but like Hojicha, red roasted tea. Also quite hoppy bitterness, pine, resinous, b.o. Very prickly in the mouth and a very bitter finish.
Bought @ Toko Dun Yong, A'dam - 95 cents only, due to it being a little past the BB date. Pours a deep red colour - darker than amber I would say. Firm rocky beige head with good retention. Aroma's of caramel malt, some hops and a bit of red fruit. Retronasal follows this, perhaps some bitterness as well. Flavour is light moderate bitter with light caramel malty sweetness. Normal body, not too thin. Finishes with moderate bitterness. Still very pleasant and well drinkable despite its age.
Bottle (Mr Mama). Deep clear amber with a lasting pale beige head. Aroma of bread, singed toffee, grapefruit, pine. Creamy. Almost burnt toffee. The malt is not overwhelmed by resin but it's getting towards that. Brief finish with modest bitterness. Pretty good, not quite my sort of thing.
330ml bottle. Pours dark, clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel, pine, spices, nuts. Taste is light sweet, caramel, resin, dried fruit. Mild bitter finish. Excellent.
330ml bottle. Clear dark amber colour with a beige head. Aroma: malty, dried fruit, hops, pine. Taste: malts, dried fruits, caramel, spices, resin, hops, bittersweet leading to a bitter finish. Medium body, average carbonation. Quite nice, better as it warmed.
Clear deep amber colour, small but thick beige creamy head, good retention and lacing. Aroma roasted malts, caramel, dark fruits, raisins, touch of wood. Flavour medium sweet and bitter, malty, roasty, toffee, fruity, raisins. Sweetbitter aftertaste, roasted malts, fruity notes, bit of wood. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, well-balanced and tasty amber ale.
Bottle at RateBeer Best. Pours a dark amber with small off white head. The aroma is dark fruit and yeast. Medium body, toasted malt, yeast, light finish, decent.
33cl bottle into a Chimay chalice at home on 10th Sep 2015. Cheers son for winning this for me. Off white topping to a reddy brown body. Malty, yeasty nose, Belgian like in fact. Some hop bitterness arrives in the aroma once the maltiness has elapsed a little, or I got used to it. The taste is also malts first with the hops coming through later, mild yeast presence in the background. Highly carbonated, a little too much for me to be honest, almost ’fizzy’ in nature. Dry finish to the taste, but the hop bitterness does not linger, the malts come strong again towards the end.
