Bottle. Almost pitch black and opague. Grassy herbal aroma with honey and licorice. Some woody notes. Malty roasty salty flavor, sweet with honey, hints of wood and licorice. The wood lingers on in the aftertaste.
Bottle. Pours a dark brown with no head. The aroma is roast, booze, wood. Slick body, dark chocolate, wood, boozy, did not hold up well.
Honey-flavored and oak-aged, but otherwise very typical black IPA, the first beer in a series of four in which three breweries participate. Highly hopped with Mt. Rainier, Citra and Simcoe. Beige, creamy, sticky head, colour very opaque brown, near black. Aroma of coffee, grapefruit, mango, leather, bitter honey, cedar wood, liquorice. Soft dry taste, smooth and supple without the oily texture that would typify a heavy stout, spicy, woody, roasted bitterness increasing towards the finish, complex and very, very dry in the end. I bet this would make an excellent companion for a good cigar.
Bottle shared at Delirium Hoppy Loft, side by side with Or. Pours black with a small thick tan head. Aroma of rich chocolate, roasted malt, molasses, light coffee and a touch of vanilla. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. Mouthfeel is thick and oily. Full bodied with soft carbonation. A little fuller and more intense than the Or.
Bottle shared @ Timo’s/tkrjukoff’s CCB Day tasting on July 7, 2012.Very dark brown to black color, brown head. Sweet, roasted, grainy, some spice and cheese, also alcohol scent. Sweet, malty, honey, smooth taste, alcohol. Smooth lean mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.
355 ml bottle shared @ tkrjukoffs CCB Day tasting. Pours hazy black with a small brownish white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace. Smell is sweet and malty with liquorice fudge, sweet dark rye bread, alcohol, prunes, coffee, pine, grapefruit juice, hay and burnt caramel. Taste is sweet, bitter and slightly metallic with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, coffee, grass, pine, black pepper, resinous wood, bitter chocolate, alcohol and prunes. Mouthfeel is tiny sticky sweet, slightly oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, coffee, grapes, rye bread and wood.Â
Bottled@Craft Beer Co, London during July-August visit. Quite much a pitch black colour with a mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, mild ashes, coffee and some slight fruity and hoppy notes. Flavour is floral hops, some roasted malts, mild ashes and some chocolate. Also smoked wet wooden notes
Entering old rates. 12oz bottle.
33 cl bottle from Barley Wine, Copenhagen. Black liquid with reddish hue and small tan head. Aroma is woodier than Or, and more balanced and soft. Of course also hoppy and roasty but maltier with notes of caramel, toffee and similar malty notes. Taste is also dryer and heavily bitter and roasty, malty notes. Much more balanced than Or. Really nice. Medium bodied with ok carbonation. Really, really nice and quite malty.
0.33l bottle. This is a really black beer with a small sidesticking chocolate head. Lots of aroma; roasted malts, really hopy, sweet honey, light grassy and also lots and lots of leather and some hints of sweet chocolate. Thick and velvety mouthfeeling, really full-bodied and low on the carbonation. Really nice and roasted flavors, also some light sweetness that I guess comes from the honey. Notes of dark chocolate, cocoa and more roasted malts. Ends mild hoppy with a longlasting roasted, light sweet and not least warming aftertaste. Really nice, and I'm looking forward to trying the next in the series!
