Cuvée de Mortagne is the barrel aged version of Land Van Mortagne. It offers an immense complexity due to the tannins of the wooden barrels and the flavour profile of the wine they once contained.
Our classic Cuvee de Mortagne uses French red wine barrels.
Marsala barrels (Marsala, an Italian fortified wine, from Sicily area)

This is something special, but really tasty, complex and characterful. Beer meets sweet wine and raisins... I don't mind it was flat on the contrary. Really liked it. Great!

Bottle @ home. Dark brown colour, some rocky beige foam, disappears quickly. Very soft carbonation. Aroma of port, fortified wine, dried fruit (plums and figs), some vanilla. Taste is medium sweet, some fruity tartness, very light bitterness. Well balanced. Great beer.

One of the new Cuvée de Mortagne variants, this one aged on marsala barrels (the Italian equivalent of sherry, so to speak); bottle shared by Erwin at the New Year’s reception of ‘his’ Ghent beer club, cheers mate! Thin and open, bubbly, pale yellowish-beige, eventually completely dissolving head, hazy deep mahogany brown robe with ruddy hue. Intense aroma strongly drenched in fortified wine (marsala indeed, tawny port- and madera-like aspects as well), caramel, lots of vanilla-scenting wet oak wood, stewed plums, walnut liqueur, hazelnut oil, cognac, candi sugar, fig jam, candied cherries. Sweet onset, lots of fig compote and blackberry jam with a sour, green apple-like undertone, softly carbonated with a smooth, vinous, full mouthfeel; very caramelly, bit biscuity and even slightly chocolatey malt sweet middle with lots of fruity esters and soft spicy notes, ending with a very generous dosage of ‘dusty old wood’, including lovely oaky vanilla reinforced by a strong marsala effect, manifesting itself very prominently in a sweet, boozy, warming, liqueurish finish – with the Cuvée de Mortagne already completely intertwined with the marsala. Apparently this combo was a match made in heaven, I am very much looking forward to the vermouth edition now. Alvinne at its most brilliant again – I’m so glad I have never lost track of this wonderful brewery.
