Creamy, gently warming Swiss-style holiday lager with a malty taste and aroma, low bitterness, and a reddish-brown color. Frogichlaus is mellow and soothing, the perfect beer to settle down for a cold winter's nap. Inspired by a man so lively and quick, we knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick!

With the font and the label style, really looks like they're trying to capitalize on Samichlaus. Cheap shot but it's not bad beer. On the other hand not that great either.

Pours clear, dark amberbrown. Small ring of white head. Scent is rich, earthy, fall-leaves, caramel, sugar, burnt sugar. Taste is full, sweet, sugary, earthy, caramel. Very nutty finish in the late aftertaste. Complex and intense, long lingering. Very nice ! Mild bitterness, but mostly just sweet, winter-warmer.

12 oz bottle from Tavour. 2019 vintage at 14.1%. Pours out a dark, clear brown with a tiny ring of fine bubbles. Aroma is sweet malt. Taste is more of the sweet malts with some molasses notes. Finishes with a nice glowing warmth, pretty gentle for a high ABV beer.

Hoppin' Frog's interpretation of the legendary Swiss Samichlaus, Europe's strongest lager and an old school monument on the classic European beer map. Bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Loose, warm yellow beige, very bubbly head, forming mouse with a certain amount of forcing, but quickly dissolving into nothing, like the head on a glass of Coke; lightly hazy, deep burgundy bronze robe with ochre-ish edges. Strong aroma of candied figs, raisins soaked in rum, plum wine, 'rocks' of dark candi sugar, ruby port, caramel sauce, tea, candied cherries, honey, raisinbread and a lot of oxidized old madera, even some rusty iron. Very sweet onset, sticky and syrupy, very honeyish with soft carb, thick caramelly maltiness with a brown-bready edge, vague tin-like metallic effect at the edges; ends very sugary with a light herbal note but nowhere turning truly hop bitter, so that the candied cherry-, honey- and rock sugar-like sweetness continues. Alcohol comes on very strong of course, in the form of a very port- and liqueur-like warmth, yet somehow avoids downright unpleasant wryness; something meaty, due to proteins no doubt, appears all the way at the back as well. Very sweet even for a Doppelbock, but a rich, refined dessert beer nonetheless - the bottom-fermented equivalent of (English style) barleywine. Very interesting, but not quite at the level of the original Samichlaus.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 11/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/copper, light ruby red color with a 1 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, red grape, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, leather, tobacco, smoke, herbal, wood, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. A bit too fruity/yeasty aromas, slight booze as it warmed, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, red grape, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, leather, tobacco, smoke, herbal, wood, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, woody, grassy, peppery, roast bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, dark fruit, cherry, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, red grape, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, brown bread/crust, molasses, licorice, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, leather, tobacco, smoke, herbal, wood, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, not overly fruity/yeasty. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/slick/bready, lightly sticky, and slightly chalky/resinous mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 12.4%, with minimal booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic huge doppelbock style! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Tastes extremely similar to Samiclaus as expected. Insanely rich dark/Munich malt complexity, moderate dark fruity malt flavors, and nice solid earthy hop presence/balance against sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected. Will definitely age really well as with Samichlaus.
