Barrel Aged (Sour) Fruitbeer. Infusing our sour Five A Day fruit beer with a bottle of Goossens '58-'62 gueuze seems to have done the trick and had quite an impact on the beer. In any case everyone really likes this beer.

Almost no head, deep dark ruby beer. Very vinous, red wine, even portwine, cherries, other red fruit. Sour cherries, tart red berries, even buckthorn, billberry, raspberry and others. Maltbacking is just right to give it a serious beercharacter, not just fruitdrink. Very tart, dry-out effect, medium carbonation at best. AH!!! Finally Guido Feniks has again moored at the Quelque Chose quality!

Bottle, release #01, batch 01, bottle 406. Color: Hazy reddish, off-white head. Aroma: Sweet and sour red fruit, berries. Taste: Alternating moderate to medium sweet and sour, red fruit like strawberry, raspberry, cherry and berries. Light bitterness. Subtle notes of wild yeast funk. Hints of wood. Dry-ish mouthfeel. Medium to above medium body, average carbonation. Long lasting fruity finish. Interesting, nice sourish fruit beer.

Interesting fruit beer by Feniks, from a 75 cl bottle with crown cap (number 122 from batch #1 apparently) bought at Bierhalle Deconinck. Made with sour cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, sloe and strawberry, but what is more surprising, if not astonishing, is that this is also – and I simply quote the label – “infused with 60 year old Goossens lambic”. A batch of ancient Goossens bottles was uncovered in a cellar a few years ago and these were brought into the commercial circuit – I was lucky enough to have a sample, oldest beer I ever tasted – so I suppose the Feniks guys got their hands on a bottle as well and for unclear reasons decided it would be a good idea to use it in this experimental fruit beer batch… Thick and foamy, moussy, papery lacing, ‘dirty’ off-pinkish white, stable head on a deep and warm amber-hued copper coloured beer with golden edges and minuscule dots of sediment floating throughout, perturbed by vivid sparkling. Aroma of stewed plums (the sloe, I guess), red raspberry juice and even grenadine, strawberry jam, candied cherry, redcurrant a bit less obvious, other impressions of red apple, Liège pear syrup, soap, sugared rhubarb, rosé wine, soggy white bread, subtle hints of sweet sherry, wet wood, damp hay, wet tree leaves. Obviously very fruity onset with a high dosage of especially sloe, strawberry and raspberry, with the sour cherry and especially the redcurrant being less prominent; fizzy carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. A subtle fructose sweetness, on the brink of becoming too sweet, lurks underneath and even sticks a bit to the teeth, with a vague grenadine-like effect; there is, however, a good deal of fruit acidity too to provide some balance against this sweetness, even a tad lemony here and there. Still, the sugary effect accompanies the whole palate and is only partially dried by the acidity; ends a tad vinous, fruit juice-like and with only the faintest dash of earthy, woody, sherryish old lambic, with even the wine barrel ageing remaining (too) subtle. I guess the supply of Goossens lambic was way too limited to make it an important factor here – so why not use young lambic from Girardin, Boon, Lindemans or any of the other producers? Now this lambic element, proudly advertised on the label, remains a very elusive hint, only to be found after thorough investigation and therefore easily overlooked. More or less enjoyable, in all, as a sweet fruit aperitif, a ‘rosé beer’ in the artisanal sense of the word like there are others around these days (see similar beers in the ranges of, among others, Broeder Jacob, Dame Jeanne or Den Triest). Not bad for what it is, but I cannot get past the idea that this is also a painful waste of precious old Goossens lambic…

Sampled at zythod 2018. Thnx for sharing, everyone ! Pours clear, reddish pink. Smell is very fruity. Sweet. Tad soapy almost. Taste is full. Sharp. Acidic fruityness over a sweet basebeer. Nice. Actually. More of a beer to try, than to actually drink.
