Spicted Sour Ale with Brett (Smokestack Series)

Never content with brewing "to style," our brewing team's approach to Funkier Pumpkin is far from your standard take on pumpkin spice beers. Choosing to focus on the complexity that brettanomyces can bring to a beer, Funkier Pumpkin offers subtle pumpkin flavor accented by traditional spicing in a beer that showcases the hallmark earthy/forest floor notes of our house wild yeast strain.

Bottled@Rådhuskällaren. Orangeish amber colour with a mediumsized creamy head. Aroma is pumpkin (more spices, than real pumpkin though) with some sweet malts and mild herbs. Flavour is spicy, some sweet malts, herbs and a bit of funk to it as well.

750mL c&c poured into a neighbors shaker glass when I brought this to their house for Halloween. After the regular funky pumpkin and a general disappointment in pumpkin beers I had low expectations. But I really enjoyed this beer. A soft funk with light herbalness and just a little bit of pumpkin spice No sweetness or strong artificial flavors. A nice soft and biscuity base to the beer. I may actually try to buy this again. A thick glowing amber orange color with low clarity and a good deal of sediment by the end of the bottle.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/24/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass; with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, tart lemon, lime, pineapple, green apple, pear, grape, berries, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of hay, straw, pepper, leather, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, tart lemon, lime, pineapple, green apple, pear, grape, berries, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of hay, straw, pepper, leather, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Moderate fruity tartness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, spices, tart lemon, lime, apple, pear, grape, berries, biscuit, light hay/funk, and yeat/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and tart/spiciness. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy, and lightly acidic/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an excellent spiced Brett wild ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink for the ABV with the balanced tartness. Not funky enough to overwhelm the spice flavors, but still has great Brett complexity. I would love to revisit this in a year to see the differences. A very enjoyable offering.
