One of a handful of commisioned beers Totem made so far, this one for a private event, a wedding to be precise, but after the wedding the leftover was briefly sold (from tap) at Kantien in Ghent a couple of months ago. Pale greyish white, quickly opening, thin ring of a head on a cloudy ruddy bronze beer with warm mahogany hue. Aroma only relatively subtly smoked, smoked wood embedded in impressions of ripe peach, caramel sauce, dried plums, raisins, honey, raw green bell pepper, rainwater, cherry tree resin, fermenting apples, wet earth. Sweetish, estery onset, ripe pear and plum, stewed apples with a sourish edge, medium carb, resinous mouthfeel with quite a lot of almost sticky, honeyish, residual sugariness to it, on a very caramelly malt base; smokiness pops up at the end but remains subtle, drenched in ripe fruit esteriness, lingering sweetness which becomes a tad cloying eventually; an earthy herbal hop accent adds very soft background bitterness in the tail, while earthy-bready yeasty notes are deposited on the root of the tongue. Very vaguely, a note of puddle water and something sulfuric appears retronasally. Not Totem's best creation so far - it seems they tend to hold back (too much) when brewing under commission; less of that sulfuric aspect, less sugary sweetness and more outspoken smokiness could have made a much more memorable ale.
