Bottled. Hazy yellow colour with a mediumsized foamy white head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is spices, some fruits, mild yeasty tones with some herbs and some zest. Flavour is fruity, some spicy yeast along with some herbal and mild grassy tones. Refreshing Saison.
Special edition of Belgoo's Saisonneke, dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, one of Germany's answers to the ubiquitous New World hops. Thick, foamy, egg-white, cobweb-lacing, stable and pillowy head towering over a lightly misty, warm yellow blonde beer with 'old golden' tinge and fierce sparkling. Aroma of ripe banana, cantaloupe, orange juice, ripe pear, brioche bread, honey, dried rosemary, apple peel, damp straw, spoiled cucumber, clove, vague touch of urine somewhere but not in a bad way. Crisp, fizzy onset, bit overcarbonated perhaps but it is saison so this is easily forgiven; its minerally effects accompany a sweetish fruitiness of pear, apple peel and banana over a slender but rounded, cereally middle, with some honeyish sweetness lingering - but only very thinly so, luckily. Some plaster-like flavours around the edges, a tad soapy even, but then the hops set in to save the day, adding a spicy, leafy, bit herbal bitterness and a retronasal touch of mandarin and melon; clove-like phenols and bready yeastiness linger about, with this ripe pear-like effect continuing too, probably a combination of the hops and the esters. Refreshing for sure, easily drinkable and very Belgian with a postmodern twist, this is quite alright for a standard Walloon style saison, though the spoiled fruit vegetable-like effect in the nose (both orthonasally and retronasally) distracts a bit from what this beer is really about. Needs a bit of cleaning up, which I remember was not the case for other Belgoo beers including regular Saisonneke - so only in that sense, I may perhaps be mildly disappointed here.
BXL ‘19. Fairly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of peppery yeast, citrus and light malt. Flavour is light to moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Light medium bodied with soft carbonation.
33cl bottle: BB Mar 2020. Poured into a Chimay chalice at home on 16th Aug 2019. Clear golden body, lasting white head. Light orange like aroma and taste with yeasty twist in both also. More like a Blonde than a Saison really, easy and pleasant on the palate.
Sample @ BXL BeerFest 2018, shared with Belgian RB crew, thanks.
Bxlbeerfest. Pours yellow. Aroma is fruuts, citrus, lemon. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruits, dryness. Overall: ok
