Gouden Carolus Easter contains several types of malt and during the brewing process three different kinds of herbs are added to give it that fine, special taste. Its ruby red colour, high alcohol concentration of 10% alc.vol. and its full and well-balanced taste are a source of vitality and strength. A true delight, even for the most critical connoisseur.

6 November 2021. Vintage bottle via Gentse Biervereniging. BB: 02/2012, rest of the label as good as ruined, so my guess is the 2010 edition. Hazy dark amber-brown, thin, foamy tan head. Aroma of candi sugar, burnt caramel, cinnamon, liquorice, biscuit, peanut, brown rum, date, raisin, ripe pear. Taste has sweet date, apple & pear in a ripe, oxidized way; caramelly and biscuity maltiness supporting spicy liquorice, herbs & faint nuts. Herbal hoppy finish, lots of dried fruits, caramel, candi sugar and warming brown rum-like alcohol. Full body, oily-syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Sweet, rich and satisfying; I guess the ageing really toned down the herbal-spicy notes.

How: Bottle.
Where: From Systembolaget, had at home.
Appearance: Amber colour with a white head.
Aroma: Dried fruit, anise, caramel, raisin, alcohol.
Body: Medium body and carbonation.
Flavour: Liquorice, spices, fruit, plum, alcohol. A bit too much alcohol that shines through in the finish.

Black licorice jelly beans, an Easter tradition, now in a bottle. Lots of anise and licorice in the aroma and taste, brown/black body with silky, but full, beige head. Sweet malt smell, licorice and ouzo on the finish, some slight alcohol warmth. This a new Easter tradition I could get used to!

Very dark brown colour. Aroma of aniseed balls. Flavours of very sweet aniseed and some liquorice. Rich and silky. Good quality but flavours are not to my taste.
