The Second Age in Lord of the Rings lasted for 3441 years and ended with the downfall of Sauron's army when he was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men following the downfall of Númenor.

I did not age this Cuvee de Mortagne as long as the Second Age, but the double barrel aging inspired me to call Fellowship beer n°3 Second Age. Aging for almost one year in an Armagnac barrel, we then transferred the beer into 2 smaller White Port barrels aging for another 6 months. It's a beast of a beer, full of flavour and complexity. Little tip, you might like to share this one with friends

Cuvée de Mortagne aged on white port and armagnac barrels, part of last year’s Fellowship; 75 cl bottle shared by Craftmember, cheers! Yellowish beige, moussy, medium thick, proportionally stable head on a hazy deep chocolate brown beer with glowing ruddy-bronze hue. Intense and complex bouquet of old wood (including that typical oaky vanilla), rye bread dough, raisins soaked in rum, prunes, medlar, blonde sugar, armagnac indeed, white port somewhat less outspoken but recognizable enough as well, hints of dried blueberries, gravy, marmite, blood orange jam, fig leaf, biscuit, candied dates. Dense, refined sweetness in the onset, candied plum, raisin, fig and sweet juicy blood orange impressions, soft carb, very full and soft-edged mouthfeel. Deep caramelly and brown-bready malt body with very subtle toasty edge, generally sweet though, leading upwards to a warming, rich finish of cooked and dried fruit, a touch of gravy and gingerbready spicy notes adorning a vanilla-breathing oakiness (including drying tannins though not in an astringent way) and lingering maltiness – fuelled by the sweet, refined flavours of both the armagnac and the white port complementing each other beautifully rather than conflicting. The alcohol as such is a soothing glow, but nothing wry or burning in spite of this beer’s strength; all those malty, oaky, fruity and spicy flavours just keep going, while hops play around only behind the scene. Very rich, deep, sophisticated ‘bière de dégustation’, a true masterpiece in which all the little details fall into perfect order – you rarely see quadrupels of this quality and complexity. Everyone tasting this that night was equally impressed so have a very high score – Alvinne truly remains one of the most underrated breweries in Belgium, in spite of their dedicated fan base.

THT 2021. Darkbrown with white head. Sweet malts, cherries, rye, massive barrel. Sweet, rich, bitter, sour. Over medium body and soft carb. Tastes like a blend of sours and stouts and more.

Bottle at THT June. Dark brown with big dark beige head. Roasted malts, licorice, earthy, port, dark chocolate, soft funk, vanilla, red wine. Quite sweet, also solid roasted bitter. Almost full bodied, slightly boozy. Very earthy, but quite interesting.
