25cl Bottle: cheers Mat, another rare and wonderful beer I have shared with you. Poured a cloudy dark brown with a thin beige head. Nose was red wine and semi-sour red berries. The taste was also wine like and ’funky’ with again a red berry influence: so a flavoursome but ’tart’ beer with plenty going on, there was a dry finish with a woody undertone throughout. I like complex beers more and more these days, my palate must be getting a little more discerning.

Bottle from Geers. Dark brown colour, creamy beige foam. Gusher! Nose of caramel, red wine, raisins and sugar. Vinous, some notes of balsamico. Bitter hoppy finish. Nice but too pricy.

Excellent quad from the unlikeliest of partners, spanning the northern and southern hemispheres. Immediate aroma of pit fruit, pours out with nice fluffy head, murky brown body. Taste is plums and prunes, head lasts throughout session. If I didn’t know the pedigree, I would have guessed Belgian.

25cl bottle from Vinmonopolet somewhere in Oslo. A real gusher. Wasn’t quite prepared for that. Oaky and balsamic notes is noticeable already from the mess that came out the bottle before I managed to put a glass under. The rest pours slightly messy dark brown with an off-white to light beige head. Dark malty aroma with caramel, dark dried fruits, balsamic vinegar, oak and some vinous notes. Less sweet than expected and more sour and acidic notes than expected. Surprisingly easy to drink and somehow well balanced with the high alcohol content pretty well hidden. A bit to fizzy, but certainly pleasant stuff.

Leicht süßer Antrunk, leichte Holznoten. Dunkel herb, wenig aromatisch. Minimale Säure. Rundes, vielleicht etwas zu mildes Imperial Stout. 11/9/9/9//10

Flaske 0,25l fra Vinmonopolet, Tromsø Sentrum. Batch 860B. #00607. Skibotn 4 Mai 13. Dyp mørkebrun. Kjempehøyt luftig skum med litt farge. Litt lacing. Svakt syrlig aroma. Smaken friskt syrlig. Overraskende. Stikkelsbær? Myk munnfølelse. Smaken behagelig syrlig. Blir litt uvariert. Litt sedimener igjen i flaska. Alkoholen godt kamuflert. KI=3

Bottle, 14C. From a La Chouffe tulip. Almost black with an inch of beige head that’s never less than a fat coat and leaves spots of lace all over the empty glass. Aroma of plums, cherries, raisins, flowers, leather, brown sugar. First whiff is all wine - like a Mt Avoca shiraz - then malty and sour beery notes emerge. And it is quite sour with a creamy, slightly slippery texture that makes it very nimble for its strength. Vibrant fruity flavours of plums, sweet grapes and sour cherries, creeping bitterness. A bit of a zing in the finish again suggests brett, there’s also tobacco, white pepper and lingering sour cherry. Just a touch of booze there too, though it didn’t seem out of place. Reminds me of De Dolle Oerbier a bit. Not really what I was expecting at all. [4.2]Didn’t expect to see this again, but it showed up in the Bridge Rd advent calendar. Colder due to warnings of gush - success, it only crept. La Trappe glass this time because it’s a large target. Vinous and leathery with a firm woody bitter finish. Gusher warnings had me expecting sour notes might have taken over, but not at all - there’s a greater intensity of dark fruit that’s now more blackberry and blackcurrant than plum (and therefore makes it more reminiscent of Rochefort 10 rather than Oerbier). Some chocolate too. A more than fair tilt at great.
