Bottle. Clear mahogany with fizzy light brown head. Figs, raisins, brown sugar, Armagnac, vanilla, dry oak, caramel pudding, bourbon. Over medium sweet, less bitter. Over medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Nice beer, complex and balanced. Could maybe have a bit more solid body, but this is the best Chimay oak aged version I've tried so far.
Small cream-coloured head over deep cola-coloured to brown beer. Sweet, almost syrupy nose. Dark malts, alcohol & fusels. Oakwood, chocolate, brandy. Sweet, yet dry impression, nutty and a tad chocolatey. Dry apple skins, glazed with brown candi sugar and brandy. Old wood. Well-bodied, boozy to alcoholheat, chewy, viscous. Not very carbonated. I liked the 2023 (Calvados) better. Still... Txs to Stef!
Dark brown colour with thin head. Aroma of dried fruits and a little nuttiness. Flavour has a sweet note of malts, raisins and dates. The woody dryness of the barrel is very noticeable and pleasant.
375ml wire corked bottle, kindly shared by Finn. Creamy, dense off-white head that stayed fine over a dark brown body. Fair lacing. Inviting stewed fruits and caramel on the nose. Mid-sweet vanilla taste, impacts of prunes, caramel, and bread. Woody. Lingering dried fruity ending, lightly roasted. Full bodied. Enjoying sipper early on a Saturday afternoon. (Tromsø 23.01.2021).
Julegave fra Christophe. Delt med Rune i WCveien. Ultramørkebrun. Lavt tett skum med litt farge. Aroma av vanilje & mørk frukt. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken nøtter. Litt krydder. Tørket frukt. Lett tørr avslutning. Toppøl!
Bottle at home, darker almost black beer, small head. Aroma is malt, raisins, fruit, dark ripe fruit, hint of Armagnac. Taste is the same, bittersweet, vinous, some wood, very nice
0.375 l bottle from 'Drinks & Gifts', bottled in February 2020. Probably clear, very dark ruby with a medium large, slightly fluffy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity, moderately yeasty-spicy aroma of dark ripe fruits, brandy, light marzipan, a touch of molasses and hints of vanilla. Quite sweet, malty, gently fruity and slightly yeasty-spicy taste of prunes, figs, raisins, some brandy, light marzipan, a touch of vanilla and traces of molasses, followed by a medium long, minimally bitter, gently yeasty-spicy, slightly woody and a little boozy finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. I'm always excited to try a new variant of barrel-aged Chimay Bleue, and every time I'm a little disappointed. It's tasty, it's well-balanced, but the flavours are a bit too subdued for my liking, just like the base beer. At least it's less pricy than the La Trappe Oak Aged Quad variants.
75cl bottle from Comptoir des Fagnes beer store in Belgium at the Zichovec barrel tasting. F: big, egg-white, long lasting. C: brown, hazy. A: sweet mellow fruity, banana, caramel, cherries, bit raisins, nutty touch. T: full malty base, mellow caramel fruity, bit violet, red wine touch, woody, banana, brown bread, medium carbonation, very good yet not great as I expected.
Bottle kindly shared by Rubin 77. Aroma of vanilla, wood, banana. Taste, caramel, chocolate, banana, wood, alcohol.
