Draught, taster @MBCC 2023, Copenhagen (Denmark). 06/05/2023. [#6.418 Global - #104 Italy - #3 Birrificio Italiano] Pours hazy pale yellow with a white head. White wine, yeast. Grapes must. Some funk and brett. Good aroma. Funk apricot and white grapes. Balanced acidity. Next one please!
Low alcohol grape ale – this unique Italian style need not always be barleywine-like apparently – made with unripe (!) Marzemino grapes from Trentino. Thanks to Ama Deke for sharing at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest. Snow white, open but otherwise stable ring of foam on a hazy deep golden beer with vague khaki tinge. Aroma of indeed sour green grapes and lots of them, green gooseberry, Granny Smith apple, sourdough, unsugared yoghurt, chalky note, unripe peach, raw rhubarb, lemon juice hint. Lots of rhubarb- and green apple-like green, tart fruitiness in the onset, very crisp, the sourness accentuated by lively carbonation; quite full-bodied for this modest ABV. Wheat-slick, cereally malt core dried by green grape astringency but nowhere harsh, along with chalky notes feeling like a Berliner Weisse rather than an Italian grape ale. Yoghurty-sour finish, something sweaty, with lots of sour grape effects, adding a tannic grape peel factor to the whole. Crisp, very ‘green’ and ‘crystalline’, utterly refreshing and very ‘different’ take on the Italian grape ale idea, pleasantly surprising indeed.
Sampled @ Billie's Craft Beer Fest 2021. A slightly hazy yellow golden beer. Aroma of tart pale malt, grapes. Taste of grapes, lime, brett.
Superb low abv session sour.
