Bottled 16/01/18. Birthday beer no. 2. Almost completely flat. Biiig funky cheesy smell, lots of goat that just ran a marathon. Reasonably thick and smooth. In the taste a lot of wood, but subtle sherry. Funk, some hay, and nice amount of cheese. Lovely.
Part 1 of the great Zenne Y Frontera tasting. Descriptions limited to the differences.
All batches same colour, save for Solera (Batch 2): No head, peachy-orange veiled beer. Mellow gueuze with pretty fruity notes. Bit vinous, peach. Nutty flavour; strange vinous sweetness, oloroso. Not much carbonation.
75cl bottle @ Tilquin admin gathering, merci Pierre. Vertical with Blend # 20, 21, 49 & 50.
Dorée, col fin blanc;
Fruity, dry, citrus, lemon, quite acidic, mineral, oaky. Overall: very good.
Rated most recently as the third Zenne y Frontera, part of a series of four recently released simultaneously and one of only two in that series that have been made according to the solera method (an 18th century production method in Spanish wine and sherry), like the second batch. Tasted alongside the three others at Lambik-O-Droom. Medium thick, bit irregularly edged, eggshell-white, opening head leaving behind some flat 'islands' in the middle; hazy peach blonde robe with warm amberish glow, a tad darker than the three other batches. Aroma of dry peach kernels, linseed, dried old grapefruit peel, dusty attic, old bread crust, dry bitter herbs, sherry vinegar, grass silage, old books and indeed a vague whiff of actual dry sherry lurking in the background. Crisp, lively onset, lemony sourness blended with more wry-ish aspects of grape skin, peach kernels and unripe plums, lively yet refined carbonation as befits a bottled lambic blend - but a bit softer than the carbonation in batch 4. Drying lactic tartness and woody tannins over a dry, bread-crusty 'bed' with ongoing dry and tart fruity notes, the woodiness even turning a bit astringent in the end, when plum kernel and bitter fruit peel aspects return, propelled by the wood. Ends dry, dusty, hayish and a tad earthy in the very end, with a dash of very dry oloroso sherry adorning the tail, albeit again in a very subtle manner, never coming to the foreground like it did in the second batch - so like the other three new Zennes, this one offers less sherry flavour than the first two batches, which have meanwhile become the stuff of legend. In comparison with the other three new Zennes, however, this version distinguishes itself in being seemingly more tannic and fruit peel-like astringent, harbouring a lot of depth and complexity. I would love to see how this one - and of course the three others - will evolve in time, but considering how fast these bottles sell, I guess it will not be evident to find an aged one within several years from now. If only I had been quick enough to buy the pack!
Batch 3-6 sampled in a vertical, at 3f open beer days. Pours unclear, darker blonde. Smell is full, dry, woody, mild sherry ( mostly olorosso ) . taste is full, intense, dry, olorosso, oak. Mild dried, dark fruits from the pedro ximenez. Very nice ! my favorite one of the set, and the only one i'd put on par with batches 1 and 2. might have to put these together as well one day !
