Another collaboration envisioned in the lead up to the unfortunately cancelled Hop City. Each year, some of our favourite experiences around the festival happen when sharing the variety of Leeds’ beer scene with our international visitors. Through a mutual love of best bitter, we came together with Other Half, NYC, to put together our own interpretation of the style.

We selected a blend of modern and traditional UK hop varieties, taking the floral orange character of East Kent Goldings and pairing them with Ernest, a relatively new variety born of the UK hop breeding programme, which brings pungent stone fruit and citrus aromas. For malt, we selected floor malted Golden Promise from Fawcetts in Castleford and backed this with a blend of pale crystals, lightly toasted amber malts and a touch of oat malt for mouthfeel and foam stability. Finally, we fermented with a true Yorkshire ale strain for a classic ester profile which will take your mind straight to that cosy corner of your favourite ale house.

High pressure can, big foam party. Big chunks of strong foam sticking to the glass, orange and cloudy beer. Smells a tad like marmelade. Taste is quite bitter up front, with something nutty in the back. Slight notes of bitter citrus. Too carbonated.

Yay, I found another bitter! I'd really like more if this style in Belgium. Pours fairly unclezr, darker shade of blonde. Small white head. Scent is weak, mild malty sweet impression from both malts and aromatic ( yet low intensity) hops. Taste is surprisingly bitter, much more so than the style usually is. Maltyness isn't as fresh as I had hoped, mild caramel, mild honey. Slight signs, yet noticeable, oxidation ( bbd is 1 month from now, bought it 2 weeks prior, from a fridge in a shop, and kept in fridge since) perhaps stored to warm before, perhaps just a fast deteriorating beer? Anyway' the beer itself is OK but not nearly as refined as what I had hoped for. Less malty, more bitter than is styletechnical. Certainly not a bad beer, just not what I had hoped to find.
