Seen previously at 4.9% and now at 5.1% ABV.

We’ve dialed down one of our most legendary West Coast IPA recipes to create a 5.1% homage to these bitingly bitter IPAs.

Awash with all the pithy, sticky hop characteristics we fell for some 13 years ago, Jagged Edge showcases some of the finest new world hops, boasting a clawing bitterness that coats the mouth amidst a biscuity base.

Canned BrewDog IPA based on an older recipe for West Coast IPA but, quote the brewery, “dialed down”, which says it all: no more daring and bold beers like in the early BrewDog beers, but mass-marketing the lowest common denominator of craft beer to maximize profits. At least these guys, however rebellious they once were, did not sell out to a larger concern (like e.g. Uiltje in the Netherlands did): they became a large concern themselves, and it shows in their increasingly easygoing go-to beers, which explains why the ‘hard core’ of craft beer aficionados has turned against them. Anyway, on to this Jagged Edge: snow white, thick and mousy, frothy, hops-enhanced head on a misty pale yellow blonde beer with greenish tinge. Aroma of lime zest, stale lemongrass, lychee, diesel-like dankness, tofu, blossoming lemon verbena, freshly cut white celery, cheese rind, grapefruit flesh, spring onions, white bread dough. Crisp ‘yellow-green’ onset, yuzu, unripe melon and green banana, medium carb, slender and slick body, a tad soapy on the edges (even without the use of wheat); dryish, bit grainy pale maltiness under zesty, peppery hops, adding a long but altogether benign bitterness and lots of retronasal aromas shifting colours between dank, citrusy and fruity, with impressions of spring onions, diesel, lychee, grapefruit and lemongrass. Decent enough all-round IPA for the postmodern, less discerning craft beer crowds, in all, but far removed from what I remember as West Coast IPA from the earlier days of U.S. craft brewing.

Prut. #reviewyourheartout #eatmyfartout

Can. Murky golden body, off white head. Muddled aroma, sweet tangerine, herbal. Sweetish lean body, peach jam, bitterish finish. Okay really, just not spiky in any way.
