Blueberry Jack is a psychedelic trip to flavor town. A hazy collaboration with our friends at Stillwater Artisanal Ales, it’s also the latest entry in their “Strains from Mother Nature” series. We blended together a blonde Brettanomyces-fermented ale aged in both oak barrels and foedres, then added California-grown blueberries and blackberries. After maturing, we dry-hopped the beer with reckless amounts of Citra, Mosaic and Galaxy hops for a trippy, tropical-dank aroma.

Bottle, flashy label. Unclear golden color with white head. Aroma is rye, spelt, dough, fresh yeast. Taste is the same, rye/spelt spice, just a touch berry acidity. Oily mouthfeel with low carbonation. Good, but where are the blueberries?

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/19/2017. Pours slightly hazy reddish/pinkish orange color with a 1 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/tangy blueberry, blackberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/tangy blueberry, blackberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy berries, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, oak, hay, straw, floral, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and tangy fruit balance; with zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from tartness and tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately grainy/acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 6.75%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited wild ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, berries, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate oak/pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly lactic/tangy/tannic/drying finish. Pretty much perfectly balanced fruity/funky Brett, berries, and citrus/tropical hop complexity; with nice oak presence and malt backbone to balance acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.
