Small white head over veiled golden beer. Fresh hops' nose, citrus and grassy. Dry, straw-like hops, more hay than grass; again green fruit(peel) and green citrus. Quite bitter, even a bit metallic. Light body, mild carbonation, bit fiery MF. Nice!
19 May 2021. At Dok Brewing Company. Cheers to Bene, Hanne & Sipi! Clear golden, small, frothy, white head. Aroma of apple peel, pear, yeast, unbaked bread, wet grass, white pepper, straw, herbal mix, dried grapefruit perhaps. Taste has sweetish pear, apple, vague apricot, restrained all in all against a bready-yeasty backbone, bit herbal. Grassy hoppy finish, quite yeasty & dry with lingering unripe fruit. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Bit too dry (not to be confused with bitter) for my taste with that typical 'yeasty' Dok character that seems to pop up every now and again - reminiscent of 'De Bittere Pale' so in the same league.
Good old Hopduvel, an almost legendary beer shop in Ghent named after the same mythical figure as the even more legendary beer café of the same name that once was, recently announced that by the end of this month, they will leave their site at Coupure Links where they were situated all those years, and move to a brand new site at... Dok Noord, on the other side of the city. No surprise then, that Dok Brewing Company, already present there, created this tribute and welcoming beer for them, a pale ale with Saaz and Azacca hops - so perhaps more a classic European pale than an APA, but I'll leave that discussion for what it is. Snow white, medium thick, moussy, shred-lacing, stable head on a lightly misty yellow blonde beer with somewhat greenish tinge. Aroma of freshly cut grass (very Saaz indeed), white bread, green apple, meadow flowers, Conference pear, mown lawn, moist white pepper, old dried lemon peel, green melon, cereals. Dryish onset, some green apple and unripe banana, sharply stinging carbonation with strong minerally effect, smooth body; 'clean' pale maltiness, bit grainy but 'filling' nonetheless, leading to a grassy and spicy hoppy finish, drying and long, eventually quinine- and wormwood-like even, crisp and confidently bitter. The minerally effect lingers on as well, adding to this crisp, dry, utterly refreshing character. Simple and unassuming, but powerful in its own way, clean and very crisp - in fact more a kind of saison (the old Belgian way) than a pale ale. Shows features of several beer style traditions, let's say, but a great quencher in all respects, which I am sure will sell well at both the new Hopduvel and Hal 16.
8/V/21 - on tap @ DOK Brewing Company (Ghent), BB: n/a (2021-371) Thanks to Alengrin and his beer crew for the extra beer!
Clear pale yellow beer, big creamy white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, grains, hay, cow fodder, little fruity, grassy. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: malty start, fruity, citrus notes, grassy, bit resinous, good hoppy and piny notes. Aftertaste: bit malty, grains, slightly sweet touch, some citrus, bit fruity, nice bitterness.
