Wijnber is a 'old brown ale', inspired by our regio where this style of beer is very well known. There are two classic styles of old brown ale, but Wijnberg is a new variation that is in between the two classic styles. The beer contains one third of young beer and two thirds of 'old' beer, aged for at least two years on wood barrels. For a more complex flavour we add a small amount of Jacobins, an old foederbeer made by brewery Vanderghinste in Bellegem. The end result is a complex balance of flavours between sweet and sour. The beer was named after the neighbourhood where one of the brewers grew up and it also means 'Mountain of Wine', and refers to the wine-like character of the beer.

Pours a reddish brown colour with not much foam. Aroma's: light sour, light funky, poop. Retronasal it's mildly sour, woody. Flavour is sour and bitter with a hint of sweet. Light bodied. Finish with a short but firm bitterness. I didn't like it much.

17 February 2023. At Rose Red, Bruges. Cheers to Anke, mom & dad and massive thanks for sharing!

Vintage 2020. Hazy amber, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of sour cherry, red grape, wet wood, malt vinegar, cheese, sherry, plum. Taste has sour cherry, macerated plum and grape skin in a bready, malt-vinegary profile surrounded by herbal, leathery notes. Tart, dry finish with wood, cherry stone, bitter grape skin, lasting fruity sourness and gently lactic. Medium body, slick-moussy texture, soft carbonation. Very elegant and subtle, lovely.

Bottle shared at tasting. Dark autumnal red brown color, off-white head. Aroma is...hmm well...hard to describe. Flavor is malts, leaves, sourness, tart-sour-bitter. Drinkable but not my kind of beer.

75cl Fles van FoedersOnline. Donker roodbruine kleur, dunne vuilwitte kraag. Balsamico, bessen, bosvruchten, veel hout, hint van aceton, zure rode wijn, citroen, caramel, houtig bitter en lichtzure finish. Lichte body. Minder subtiel dan de meeste bekende Vlaamse Bruinen, wel lekker.

2020 bottle. Clear brown with a beige head that hangs around as a wisp. Aroma of brown bread, wine vinegar, some cherries. Low carbonation. Quite sour but a way off dry with some quite assertive woody spices as well as bread and wine on the turn. Waits for you to come to it and gradually reveals more.

Bottle, huge thanks Nino and Casey for sharing this with the rest of us (and Ryan for making sure I tried it!). Murky red-amber body, off white head. A well balanced, enjoyable aroma mixing red wine notes with well integrated acetic acid. There's a solid malty presence and this saliva-like touch, but all makes sense really. The taste is soft, sweetish, not as complex as the aroma, light tartness, red wine and funky notes, quite pleasant really. All in all, a very good beer.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Cloudy copper colour, small head. Tart, vinous oaky nose. Dry and quite slender with well rounded mouthfeel. Vinegar and oak. Mildly acetic finish.
