Scotch (or ‘wee heavy’) aged on peated whisky barrels, Laphroaig and Staoisha to be precise. Yellowish beige, moussy, membrane-lacing, generally stable head, clear dark caramel brown robe with ruby red glow. Aroma of strong peat – bags of moist peat and outspoken iodine-like Islay whisky, heavily draped over weaker notes of caramel, hazelnut purée, tawny port, sirop de Liège, dates, vague toast and cooked plum. Sweet, clean onset, candied fig and yellow raisin aspects, very light sourish edge, medium to softish carb, smooth and slick body (actually feeling thinner than ABV would suggest). Caramelly, bit walnutty and cereally malts with light toasty edge; the sourish aspect from the start continues unabatedly too, with a near-blackberry- or even cherry-like effect, while the iodine-like peat explodes retronasally, dominating over fading notes of toast, tea-like hoppiness and warming, obviously whisky-like alcohol. Scotch ale taken to its own logical extreme by letting it mature in Scottish whisky barrels – strange that this combination is not more common, but then Scotch to begin with is of course an old-fashioned, nowadays quite uncommon beer style; this one has ‘Tall Poppy’ written all over it and in this case that is a good thing but beware, you will really need to love ‘peated beers’ for this one!

Clear dark brown colour. Aroma and flavour are peaty and very boozy. There's a nice iodine note coming through from the Laphroaig too. Nice.

20/VIII/22 - 33cl bottle @ Gents Bierfestival, BB: n/a (2022-1077)

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: oh my, all peat, very much in your face, nothing subtle about this one. Peated whisky is all you get. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: very peated, sweet, sugary, lots and lots of alcohol, very harsh, super alcoholic, some caramel maybe. Aftertaste: bitter, very peated, a bit sourish, more alcohol. Not bad, but it’s a bit much for me.

Dark cream head reduced to film in seconds over opaque cola-coloured beer. End of bottle solid yeast. Peat a mile out; very phenolic, tarred wood. Sniffing deeper, the Islay wells up, intense. Peated, if not as overwhelming as in the nose. Bit of chocolate, alcohol-infused wood and quite sweet, actually, almost sugary, but not cloying - the carbonation - and a hint of acidity, difficult to signify. Feels quite spritzy, effervescent carbonation. Hence, the body is not really heavy, if not quite refreshing. Alcoholheat comes delayed. Absolutely loveable beer! No true Scotsman, aye, but a lovely Scottish lass instead!!
