VAT 122 is a super mellow Oude Geuze. It's delicate and has gentle vinous (wine-like) notes. In the background, you'll notice soft tones of oak and frangipane. Foeder n° 122 is a large barrel added more recently to our collection. In fact it's one of our biggest barrels of all, holding around 25,000 litres. It was originally used to store and age red wine, but in its second life, Foeder n° 122 has already been filled 3 times with beautiful Lambic beer. And the 3rd filling with which we have made this VAT 122, was also the first in which the typical wild yeasts of our brewery really come to the fore in this barrel.

The VAT 122 in this new four-part series of Boon Mono Blends, described by the brewery as tender, vinous, oaky and frangipane-like - sounds totally different from the VAT 59 I just had, this series just never gets boring. Egg-white, medium thick, bit uneven-bubbled and irregular, slowly opening head, a tad less stable than on the VAT 59; hazy apricot blonde with warm old golden glow and delicate, sparse sparkling. Aroma of unripe nectarine, oxidized Granny Smith apple, small sour grapes, old books on dusty oak shelves, dandelion leaves, dry hay, cucumber peel, hard Conferende pears, withering woodsorrel, hints of old cheese rind, very old and oxidized rosé wine, grated raw horse radish. Very crisp onset, lots of vivid carbonation with lovely crystalline effects; estery fruitiness of gooseberry, wrinkled old green apples and raw rhubarb, more acidic than the VAT 59 I just had, but still on the 'malse' side; full, rounded body, indeed a tad vinous but only very slightly more so than others in this series, with a bready and rusk-like backbone, buried under a heap of ongoing sour-green fruitiness, drying lactic tartness, woody tannins and cheesy-funky Brett notes, the latter bringing the typical 'horseblanket' association without interfering too much with the play of sour and tannic dryness, which delivers a juicy, very quenching, rich ending, again 'warmed' a bit by a soft afterglow of 'jenever'-ish alcohol - fortunately, as always in this series, the alcohol does not interfere at all with the flavour. Yet another beautiful creation in this enticing series, indeed among the softer, more vinous and elegantly fruity ones perhaps, though the 'frangipane' association made by the brewery is just a bit too far a stretch for me...
