Finished in an oak foeder for 7 months this Oude Kriekis characterised by intense fruitiness. The world famous Stevensbaer Cherries are clearly dominant, supported by touches of almond, vanilla and some oak.

Since 2017, Mikkeller commissions a lambic from Boon, and having had - and greatly approved - all of those, I was looking forward to this duo: 'oude kriek' made with the renowned Danish Stevnsbaer cherry variety aged in two different ways, this one only on big foeders, the other one partially on such foeders and partially on smaller oak barrels. After that wonderful "Barrel Finish" variant, I could not resist putting this one right after it - assuming the woodiness, already more subtle than expected in the first one, is going to be even less in this one. Initially thickly moussy, pale lilac-tinged, tiny-bubbled head, reduced to a steady creamy ring and a flat 'island' in the middle after a minute or two, over a beautiful carmine red robe with deep ruby glow, clear at first and a little hazed in the end; visually about the same as the other one, but this one oddly seems a bit less dark. Aroma of a ton of bursting ripe sour cherries again, cherry wine, old wood (strangely more pronounced than in the Barrel Finish version), dusty bookshelves, almond with again that nearly marzipan-like touch, halfripe red plums, sour apple, grape skin, tree leaves to even dark green moss, hints of rosehip, wet leather and some vague swimming pool ('Boon chlorine' - but less so than in the Barrel Finish); in all, clearly different from the Barrel Finish, with a tad more Brett funkiness and 'moldiness', I guess from the more prolonged exposure to the old and 'experienced' wooden foeders. Crisp, tart onset, lemony at the edges but again filled to the brim with fleshy sour cherries, perhaps a tad sharper than the Barrel Finish with a bit less rotundity and vinosity to it; side notes of unripe plum and rhubarb are more obvious as well. Still, the juiciness and fleshiness of the cherries are strong in this one, dominating over a bready core with drying lactic and other sours running underneath; some retronasal almond from the cherry pits does appear, but less outspoken than in the other variant. Long, dry but very fruit-juicy finish with leathery Brett elements here and there, as well as tannic woodiness; as with the other one, tannic effects from the cherry pits come up strongly here as well. The last stage has more minerality and less cherry wine-like vinosity than the Barrel Finish version, with a more 'crisp' and concentrated effect, but is equally long and beautiful. It gives food for thought that even with a minor difference (two extra months in a big foeder versus two months in a smaller oak vessel), both cherry lambics came out quite distinct, much more so than I was expecting: this Foeder Finish version is more crisp, a bit more funky and strangely even a tad more woody, with a bit less vinosity and rounded fleshiness. I strongly recommend tasting both versions side by side to get full appreciation of what has been done here; in any case both are truly marvellous 'oude kriek' beers, worth every penny if you are into super-juicy fruit lambics.

Thanks Sandi for sharing! Reddish body, off-white head. Huge funk and some cherries in the aroma. Tart, light cherry-driven taste, lovely cherry profile really, with a light salty finish, some well integrated funk, somehow fresh-seeming. Quite likable, props!
