8 January 2022. At Hal 16 (Dok Brewing). Shared with the lovely Anke!
A: hazy brighty yellow, small, off-white head.
A: ripe peach, cheese, melon, tangerine, vague sulphur.
T: sweet peach, sourish citrus, grapefruit peel, dry bread.
F: piney & peppery hops, yeast, ripe stone fruit, bitter grape, harsh grapefruit peel.
P: medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.
Surprisingly dry and 'un-juicy' for a NEIPA, but if that in itself was the intention, then we have another successful Dok ale at hand (that has grown on me since I've given it another try).
Pours unclear blonde, small white head. Scent is very phenolic, milder on the hops. Taste is full, fairly creamy, restrained bitterness, but it does end a bit burning . Milder aroma, NZ style hops rather than the expected USA. Not as soft and gentle as I like them, and far from a typical NEIPA.
Hazy IPA by Dok, tasted from tap at their taproom in Hal 16 on Ghent’s Dok Noord site. Thick, egg-white, creamy and dense, shred-lacing head, cloudy pale brownish- to beige-tinged orange blonde (looking notably darker than your average NEIPA, and ‘dirtier’). Aroma of dried orange peel, bread crust, old soggy peanuts, cold French fries, thyme, unripe apricot, mandarin, potato peel, vague scent of polyester doormats. Dryish onset, unripe peach and banana peel notes, fizzy carb (even stingy); bready malt core, lots of bready yeastiness too, bread crumb effects, rusk; dry, spicy, leafy but also very earthy ‘wet’ hop bitterness in the end, turning citrus peel-like but nowhere juicy, until an odd and seemingly out-of-place sweet note of ripe mandarin pops up in the end, only to disappear again in bready yeastiness and earthy hoppiness. Weird interpretation of what is supposed to be a NEIPA: if anything, this is much more a Belgian IPA – which is bizarre, since Dok knows perfectly how to brew NEIPAs and NEDIPAs… In itself, a tasty yeasty-hoppy ale as far as I am concerned, but I have no doubt that opinions will differ vastly here and something definitely went not as planned. Benefit of the doubt for me!
21/X/22 - on tap @ DOK Brewing Company (Gent), BB: n/a (2022-1398)
Cloudy peach orange beer with a pinkish shine, under a big fluffy aery yellowish head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: oh my, yes, spot on! Super fruity, super juicy, lots of citrus, lots of tropical fruits, very juicy, lovely! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: yes, that’s it all right! Super juicy, fruity, tropical fruits, very intense hops! Aftertaste: bitter, resinous, citrus notes, juicy, tropical fruits, lovely beer, really nice, best IPA from DOK until now I think!
