awesome nose of dark chocolate roasted malt bourbona vanilla and oak. But mourn feel is way off, too light too carbonated , tons of bourbon but too bitter with big roasted malt and vanilla finish. Starts good and then....
On tap at Albertsons. Pours out inky black with a huge fluffy beige head, instant barrel/wood aroma, hints of chocolate and rum. Taste is incredibly smooth, no hint of the high ABV. Warmth comes on much later in the game. Incredible RIS, barrel aging is a huge plus.
Bottle - Mollasses, licorice and bourbon. Jet black with a rich brown head. Bourbon, chocolate, dark fruit and sugars. Although a bit strong, it is complex and I like it.
Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 4/13/14, 2013 Release
Aroma: Aroma of burnt malts, bourbon, molasses, vanilla, oak, and brown sugar
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a thin head and light, spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is sweet for the style, with a dry, burnt malt flavor, and a sweet bourbony finish
Palate: It has a medium-full body, a thick, sticky mouthfeel, and a soft mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overly sweet for my taste. The bourbon plays nicely enough with the burnt and sweet malt flavors, but it could have used a little balance. It hides the 9.6% nicely.
22 oz bottle @ home, 2013 issue. Black color. Beige head, with short retention. Aroma’s are beautiful, bourbon, vanilla, oak, some malty sweetness and hints of chocolate. The flavor falls behind, a bit bourbon, only ever so slightly sweet, hints of woody & alcoholic sourness - these flavors linger, but there’s no new flavors in the finish. Body is rather thin. Perhaps a year in bourbon barrels is a bit too long.
Pitch black, opague colour with no head. Smells peat, oak, chocolate, vanilla and swet. Tastes red fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Bit thin, but a great aftertastes.
Black, muddy body with a brownish head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, liquorice: quite complex and well balanced. Moderately sweet, moderately bitter of chocolate, spices, dark fruit.
Bottle thanks to Countbeer at ‘Zieke Zuiden Tasting II’. Pitch black, opaque color, no head. Smell al-cohol and sweet. Taste sour, wood, lots of alcohol, lightly vanilla, sour fruits. Too much carbonation. Too sharp taste in general, too sharp sourness imo. Medium body. (Bottle said ’brewmaster reserve 2009’)
Bottle of ’06 thanks to ygtbsm94: Poured a deep black with very little brown head that came and went in a flash. I was pleasantly met with a huge smell of coffee and bourbon right when I cracked the bottle. After letting it sit it still had loads of wood and bourbon aroma. Taste comes out strong bourbon that immediately reveals brash coffee bean, finish is mellow with malt and wood.
