Head reduced to rim in seconds; dirty mossy-copper beer. Liqueurish nose, nuts, alcohol, vineleaf, cognac, nougatbar. Sweet, again quite nutty, caramel, toffee, liqueur-filled bar. Nearly syrupy but still drinkable. Bitter almonds warming up. Low carbonation, slick, sticky. More than medium bodied. Bit weird all the same. Saison my *ss, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. Txs to Stef!
Celebrational one-off, a wine barrel aged old ale infused with oloroso sherry, created for the wedding of Dylan (kraddel on this site) with Amina and briefly sold through Dylan's Siris project; now two and a half years of age so I guess the time was right to open it. Many thanks to tderoeck for the bottle! Some loose, large, greyish bubbles form during pouring and initially form a loosely knit and open 'head' but dissolve eventually (not surprising - this beer was bottled without carbonation); initially clear, ruddy-bronze robe with amberish tinge, turning cloudy to even murky and more chestnutty brown with sediment. Aroma of passionfruit, clear sherry indeed, ground hazelnuts, old and oxidized Chardonnay, maraschino cherries, ketjap manis, old oak wood, blackberries, red plum, hints of caramel, medlar, balsamico, medium rare horse steak (proteins), dusty cellar, crabapple, dry earth and dead tree leaves. Fruity, tart onset, a bit astringent with unripe stonefruit and sour grape impressions next to tart blackberries and wild apples gathered in a forest, essentially sweet and rounded but strongly dried by a red berry-like acidity; flat carb (intentionally) with rounded body, dry-caramelly, brown-bready and hazelnutty malts under severely drying tartness and 'wild' and earthy notes next to ongoing red sour fruit, passionfruit and medlar coming into the picture, before everything slowly moves into a more vinous direction, with a generally tart fruit wine-like effect - over lingering 'beery' maltiness and breadiness. Woody aspects with tannic effect further accentuate astringency and tartness, while oloroso indeed shows up retronasally, along with white wine gone sour. Earthiness in the tail, but the sour red fruit effects remain dominant, while a softly warming sherry-like alcohol glow sets in while something meaty (from proteins) vaguely lurks in the background. Quite astringent, in all, which, combined with the lack of carbonation, degrades drinkability a bit - but there is no denying that this is a complex construction, a beery base with strong wine inclinations; the nose and overall flavour remind me much more of an oud bruin ('Flemish red') than a true old ale the English way - as do lots of dark beers that have undergone some or other form of souring. Tart, rich, vinous, earthy, warming and original beer - so cheers to Dylan and Amina (as well as Tall Poppy of course) for creating this one, not quite meeting my expectations of an old ale but offering a quite unique and tasty sour ale instead.
Kerstbier Festival. Clear dark reddish brown beer with a beige lacing. Aroma of dark red fruits, caramel, raisins, wood. Taste of raisins, red wine, grapes, wood.
Kerstbier Festival. Clear amber beer with a white head. Aroma of brett, tart red grapes, apples. Taste of tart red fruits, grapes, brett, moderate carbonation.
Gents Bier Festival 2023 - Very dark brown colour. Aroma and flavour of dried fruits. Raisins. Slight sharpness and funk too.
Batch #2 5.1% Huge white dense head over well-carbonated veiled golden beer. Lemon, Moroccan rice or couscous dishes with preserved lemon, cleaning fluid, and grains/kernels. Sweetish, and mineral - lacks acidity for a Gose, but the mineral is present. Again obviously preserved lemons in sugar. Finish, certainly warming up, finally has some discreet lactic acid. Bit sticky, medium carbonation; long-lasting flavours. It's not bad at all, but I can't help thinking that fresh lemons would have served it better, certainly seen the lack of acidity. Txs to Stef!
Pours a bit oily to almost clear amber-cognac coloured beer. Bit vinous, but also an aroma as from buttermilk, sourish-lactic. Caramel, fusels, autumn leaves, liqueurish. Sour, soured milk, caramel - if without the sweetness; and something... chemical... spoiled...? Difficult to pinpoint. Bit oily feel, not very carbonated; alcoholwarming. A difficult one, this. Not dissimilar to certain Weizenbocks - and I'm indeed not a huge fan of those either. Txs to Stef!
No head, clear red copper to bright deeper carmine coloured beer, still. Vinous, solvent, aldehyde, faint lactic acidity; red, half-dried fruit. Lactic acid, bit catty, faraway solvent. Grapey, blue grapes with a winey (malonic?) acidity. Acidthinning, no carbonation. Feels & tastes like quite aged Oud Bruin. Better than the first impression, in the end really enjoyable. Too bad Tall Poppy has stopped functioning, this must be one of their last. Txs to Stef!
