Bottle from Stacks. Cloudy black, quickly thinning, beige head. Strong aroma of iron at first but disappearing in favour of fondant, espresso, vanilla bean, date, pear, wood, tobacco, bourbon, pecan. Taste has sweet dried fig, date and blackberry in a thick fondant-like & pecan-nutty malt base enhanced by bitter espresso and a hint of vanilla. Peppery hoppy finish offers a spicy note (as of perhaps), dried fruits, wood, coffee & warming bourbon alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. A heavy yet delicious late late-night sipper.

31 December 2023. New Year’s Eve Tasting - Cheers to Anke, Elke, Gregory & Silke! Bottle from a Durbuy shop.

Cloudy black, no head. Aroma of blue plum, blackberry, wood, sweet whisky, dark fudge, fondant, walnut, dried fig, tobacco, leather, coffee dregs. Taste has sweet blue plum, pear & blackberry with a sourish blackcurrant streak, slightly roasted and dark-chocolatey. Earthy & peppery hoppy finish, lingering dried fruits, tobacco, wood and warming whisky-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, flat carbonation. Old and oxidized profile but seemingly fitting the base beer.

31 December 2023. New Year’s Eve Tasting - massive thanks to Gregory for sharing this bottle!

Vintage 2014. Hazy dark golden, stable, frothy, off-white head. Expressive aroma of wet hay, barnyard, oak, vanilla, fermenting green apple & apricot, horseblanket, grass, cheese, sourdough, vague white pepper. Taste has very sour green apple, plum & gooseberry receiving a funky treatment of lactic acid, vinegar, leather & hay, kept together by a sourdough-like malt body and somewhat balanced by softly bitter notes of straw & wood. Finishes with old grassy & earthy hops, tart green apple and stone fruit's stone, yet maintaining a bitter backbone of wood (tannins) and hay, keeping the whole thoroughly dry as well. Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation. Noticeably more 'bitter' than your average Geuze but evidently well structured within the complex sour profile, a real banquet of wild fermentation. Lovely!
